Er behandelt den Krieg nicht als dramaturgisches. Die Salomoninseln , ein Paradies in der Südsee. Soldat Witt hat sich unerlaubt von seiner Kompanie entfernt, um unter den Einheimischen zu leben.

He made a habit of pointing the camera away during an action sequence and focus on a parrot , a tree branch or other fauna. Billy Bob Thornton recorded narration that was scrapped.
Martin Sheen and Viggo Mortensen participated in readthroughs of the script and are thanked in the end credits. According to Jones, "Malick removed scenes with dialogue whenever possible, with the final film varying greatly from the original concept".
The editing resulted in many of the well-known cast members being on screen for only a brief period. John Travolta and George Clooney's appearances are little more than cameos , yet Clooney's name appears prominently in the marketing of the movie.
The unfinished film was screened for the New York press in December and Adrien Brody attended a screening to find that his originally significant role, "to carry the movie", [17] as he put it, had been reduced to two lines and approximately five minutes of screen time.
On April 15, , an interview with Brody revealed that he was still upset over the removal of his work. He expressed his opinions in an interview with the London newspaper The Independent.
Malick was upset that the studio screened his unfinished version for critics and Penn ended up helping him in the editing room, shaping the final version.
The director refused to subject his film to test screenings before delivering his final cut. The film score was composed by Hans Zimmer , with additional music from John Powell.
Zimmer wrote several hours of music, and an abundance of different themes, before Malick started to shoot the film.
The director played the music on the set, while filming, to get himself, and the rest of the crew and actors in the right frame of mind. The official soundtrack features tracks that were not used on the film and some tracks from the film are not found on the CD.
The film features several pieces of Melanesian choral music sung by the Choir of All Saints in Honiara and the Melanesian Brotherhood in Tabalia , only one of which is featured on the soundtrack.
Gene Siskel described it as the "finest contemporary war film I've seen, supplanting Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan from earlier this year, or even Oliver Stone 's Platoon from He wrote, "The movie's schizophrenia keeps it from greatness this film has no firm idea of what it is about , but doesn't make it bad.
It is, in fact, sort of fascinating The battle scenes themselves are masterful, in creating a sense of the geography of a particular hill, the way it is defended by Japanese bunkers, the ways in which the American soldiers attempt to take it Actors like Sean Penn, John Cusack, Jim Caviezel and Ben Chaplin find the perfect tone for scenes of a few seconds or a minute, and then are dropped before a rhythm can be established".
In his review for Time , Richard Corliss wrote, "Some films deal in plot truth; this one expresses emotional truth, the heart's search for saving wisdom, in some of the most luscious imagery since Malick's last film, the Days of Heaven ".
However, the atmosphere created by John Toll's breathtaking cinematography and Hans Zimmer's powerful score is occasionally compromised.
The parade of cameos John Travolta, George Clooney, Woody Harrelson and John Cusack briefly appear is somewhat distracting, and the fact that Bell and Witt both have Appalachian accents sometimes makes the characters hard to differentiate.
Yet, even though it's confusing at times and perhaps a little long , Line is still a film of rare substance and power.
Owen Gleiberman gave the film a "B-" in his review for Entertainment Weekly and wrote, " The Thin Red Line could, I think, turn out to be this season's Beloved , a movie too paralyzingly high-minded to connect with audiences".

Title: The Thin Red Line Dark tale of one man's determination to survive his tour of duty. Separated from his new wife after only eight days of marriage, private Doll suddenly decides that he will no longer blindly follow the orders of his superiors, following his own mind instead.
What follows are a series of poorly planned attacks, in which Doll saves the day, time after time; eventually leading to the taking of the Elephant in the battle of Guadalcanal during World War II.
Welsh, Doll's immediate line officer grows an affinity for Doll, helping him through his first Kill, but never quite allowing himself to admit his admiration for the young soldier.
The final scene of the movie brings home the true horror of war and the meaninglessness of it all. Written by Tophee. The last line in the novel reads as follows:"One day one of their number would write a book about it all, but none of them would believe it, because none of them would remember it that way.
This film is not really at all what Jones was writing about. The film fails to find any horror in the war-- it fails to show the war as written by James Jones.
It is rather interesting to watch, because it shares many scenes with the Terrence Malick film which is the far superior work , and it is fun to compare the scenes.
That said, the two actors who play Col. Tall and Stone Stein in the book, Staros in the Malick film are both laugh out loud bad, and seem to be completely ignorant of how to effectively portray their characters Nolte and Koteas, on the other hand, aren't.
But to give the film some credit, it features a great performance by Kier Dullea or A Space Oddyssey fame, and an interesting one from Jack Warden as Welsh.
I think that the film tries to show the horror, but the production code, the script, or director didn't want to or couldn't figure out how to.
I appreciated this film more for what it tried to say than what it actually said or HOW it said it.
I would marginally reccommend it, mainly to those unfamiliar with the superior Malick film. Looking for some great streaming picks?

Title: The Thin Red Line The men of C Company,1st Battalion,27th Infantry Regiment,25th Infantry Division have been brought to Guadalcanal as reinforcements in the campaign to secure Henderson Field and seize the island from the Japanese.
They arrive near Hill , a key Japanese position. Their task is to capture the hill at all cost. What happens next is a story developing about redemption and the meaningless of war.
Regardless the outcome. Written by Frank Liesenborgs. This film is unlikely to be appreciated by audiences reared upon a diet of dumbed-down Hollywood action fare.
Director Terrence Malick's films are alive with a sense of pure cinema with every frame delivering such detail and richness that you could swear you were there.
The only other person capable of bringing such an immediate sense of time and place and sheer nuance of film although in a completely different way is David Lean, another major league craftsman.
Here, again, Malick uses his customary voice-over device although this time as a means of vocalising the abstract thoughts of the various soldiers as they struggle to make some sense of the conflict.
Malick is also not afraid to take time to illustrate the continuing natural backdrop to the carnage. Mother Nature almost seems to be occupying a pivotal supporting role as a detached observer on the sidelines, calmly and inscrutably watching the chaos develop.
Blink and you'll also miss major marquee players such as John Travolta and George Clooney. The stand-out performances come from Jim Caviezel and, especially, Nick Nolte.
Nolte just seems to be getting better and better as he gets older and his portrayal of tyrant Colonel Tall is something to see. I have never seen anyone express such an impotent sense of rage, anger and fury than Nolte does here.
It's a fantastic performance from a real pro and it's a mystery to me why he didn't get an Oscar. John Toll's pristine cinematography and Hans Zimmer's wonderfully evocative Oscar-winning score are other strong elements.
The unusual music and visuals contrast so well that Malick sometimes fades out the noise of the shouting, explosions and guns, an effect that only serves to heighten the emotional power of the experience further.
You won't see a more beautiful film about the horrors of war. Movies like this make the task of trawling through the weekly diet of dumb formulaic junk served up by Hollywood almost seem worthwhile.
