Following the completion of his first feature film, Holly , Moshe started working on the initial concept art for Bunraku in The first drafts of the screenplay were largely inspired by Westerns and martial arts movies, of which Moshe is a huge fan.
When it became clear that they would not film it, I bought it back. It has a sort of a Spaghetti Western, samurai movie feel and it's going to be built and shot entirely on a stage so it couldn't be more different than Holly , maybe degrees from it actually.
Like Holly , it also aspires to go a little beyond the pure entertainment factor, but I think that, all in all, I would like to be the kind of filmmaker who can tell and make more than one story or one type of genre.
I feel like in the past an auteur was a person who constantly challenged himself, where, today, because of the fierce competition and growing difficulty of making different and unique films, filmmakers can get stuck in a certain style and movie genre and keep recreating the same films.
It takes two years of your life to make a movie, and to me that's priceless. If I am gonna spend that kind of time pouring my blood and tears into it, then I wanna make sure I learn something on the way.
That is what life is all about anyhow, I guess, growing and learning and then realizing you know nothing at all. I think [ Bunraku ] is an opportunity to take this genre and spin it on its head and bring a unique and strong visual style to it.
Asked about his first production in a interview, McDowell said he "met with Moshe, the director of Bunraku , and his producer Nava Levin a couple of years ago, originally to consult with them.
His project was such an interesting and provocative blend of genres and technique that I got hooked and helped them to set up an innovative approach to pre-production that integrated pre-visualization, storytelling and design into a new fluid and low budget workspace for the creative team.
The story is set on a theatre stage in a folded paper world where Russian gangsters, cowboys and samurai warriors come together in inevitable and never-ending battle.
It's an elegantly choreographed dance of revenge, honor and friendship It's cool! In a interview, Hartnett, who was instrumental in getting the film Sin City made, compared the look of Bunraku to Alfred Hitchcock 's Rope , in that it will play out or at least appear to play out in one long, unedited take.
Hartnett explained "It's in the vein of Sin City or something like that, where the world doesn't look like reality at all Some of the scenes are gonna be more Michel Gondry -like I guess but a lot of them will be green screen as well It's not fantasy.
Well, I mean, it's not Narnia. It's a film that, I don't know how to stick it into a genre, but I would say it's more a film like Sin City than anything else.
The world it's set in is almost circus-like in the feel of it and it's all origami. The whole universe is constantly folding paper to create a cityscape or interiors of rooms or the sunrise.
So, if a character performed a kick which needed a physical context such as a wall, that wall would be provided in the design.
In this way, the actors should have a total freedom of space in which to work and to give of their best. The pre-visual content that he made to show during the Festival de Cannes helped director Moshe to double the amount of anticipated investment in the production.
Hartnett confirmed his involvement as the lead character The Drifter in an interview at the Sundance Film Festival while promoting his film August.
Hartnett stated "I'm going to Romania to shoot this film called Bunraku I've been trying to do as much artistic fare as I can and things that are compelling to watch as well It's a story of revenge My character is called 'The Drifter', and he comes into this world that doesn't look like anything like you've ever seen before Like my character, he's a gypsy and he's coming into town and he's got something to prove and no one really knows what he's about.
In April , Moore was confirmed to be joining the cast as the courtesan Alexandra. Harrelson is set to play The Bartender, one of the protagonists while Perlman was signed to the role of Nicola the Woodcutter, powerful warrior and crime boss, who is the central focus of vengeance for the film's protagonists.
When asked in a interview how he had managed to sign two international stars like Harrelson and Moore onto an experimental film, Moshe explained "They really liked [Moshe's film] Holly and responded immediately to the Bunraku script.
McKidd plays Killer No. Describing his character in a interview, McKidd said "I play a very effeminate, master killer who's almost like a Fred Astaire tap-dancing his way through the movie.
It's so different than anything I've done. Moshe, who also directed, wrote what I thought was one of the strangest scripts I'd ever read, especially because the story takes place in an in-depth CGI universe.
It's very allegorical — a mixture of a samurai film and a western in a virtual origami universe where everything is made of folding paper, and there's a lot of martial arts in it I thought Bunraku was interesting enough to be in.
I play the main killer of the movie who's hunting down Hartnett's character under the instruction of Ron Perlman's character, Nicola.
They've been doing the effects for the last 19 months. But then this is an independent film, not Avatar. I'm really excited to see Bunraku.
On April 23, , Japanese singer Gackt was confirmed for the role of Yoshi, a samurai warrior seeking vengeance against Nicola.
Moshe personally went to Japan to convince Gackt to join the project. In a interview, producer Ram Bergman was asked about the choice of the shooting location, stating "we needed a lot of stages available because the whole movie is green-screen and we had to build something sets.
We needed to take control of a space for five months We did not want to pay top dollar, like you would pay in London or, to a lesser degree, in Prague or Hungary Media Pro Studios had the most stages available [in Romania].
Bergman continued "we brought in heads of departments but the rest of the [film] crew was Romanian. A wrap-up party was organised at the Terminus Club in Bucharest at the end of June Brazilian -born filmmaker Guilherme Marcondes was hired to develop an animated opening sequence for the film, described as a "short [film] before the main feature".
Marcondes described the project as "an interesting project with a lot of animation techniques, and the director of the feature Moshe is letting me do my own thing.
A rare circumstance, so I'm glad to be doing it. Or a theater of shadows. Or puppets which is what Bunraku is all about, as a traditional Japanese theater.
Everything made of drawings, cardboard and wood, except for some vehicles Europeans will feel some nostalgia seeing old Fiat and Reanault R8 Gordini and swords.
Surreal and yet very much close to what we imagine as real. Cast is excellent, as well as direction, editing, music and camera.
Why not 10 stars then? There are some theatrical element I thing are not adequate for the whole composition. But you don't have to be so picky.

The role of the tayu is to express the emotions and the personality of the puppets. The tayu performs not only the voices of each of the characters, but also serves as the narrator of the play.
Located to the side of the stage the tayu physically demonstrates facial expressions of each character while performing their respective voices.
While performing multiple characters simultaneously the tayu facilitates the distinction between characters by exaggerating their emotions and voices.
This is also done to maximize the emotional aspects for the audience. In bunraku the futo-zao shamisen which is the largest shamisen as well as that of the lowest register, is employed.
The instruments most frequently used are flutes, in particular the shakuhachi , the koto and various percussion instruments.
The heads of the puppets kashira are divided into categories according to gender, social class and personality. Certain heads are created for specific roles, others can be employed for several different performances by changing the clothing and the paint.
The heads are in effect repainted and prepared before each presentation. The preparation of the hair constitutes an art in and of itself.
The hair distinguishes the character and can also indicate certain personality traits. The hair is made from human hair, however yak tail can be added to create volume.
The ensemble is then fixed on a copper plate. To ensure that the puppet head is not damaged, the finishing of the hairstyle is made with water and bee's wax, not oil.
The costumes are designed by a costume master and are composed of a series of garments with varying colors and patterns.
These garments typically include a sash and a collar as well as an under robe juban , an inner kimono kitsuke , a vest haori or an outer robe uchikake.
In order to keep the costumes soft they are lined with cotton. As the clothing of the puppets wear out or are soiled the clothing is replaced by the puppeteers.
The process of dressing or redressing the puppets by the puppeteers is called koshirae. A doll's skeletal structure is simple.
The carved wooden kashira is attached to the head grip, or dogushi , and thrust down an opening out of the puppet's shoulder.
Long material is draped over the front and back of the shoulder board, followed by the attachment of cloth. Carved bamboo is attached to create the hips of the puppet, arms and legs are tied to the body with lengths of rope.
There is no torso to the puppet, as it would merely block out the puppeteer's range of movement of the individual limbs.
The isho , or costume of the doll is then sewn on to cover over any cloth, wooden or bamboo parts that the artist doesn't wish to be seen.
Finally, a slit is created in the back of the costume in order for the chief puppeteer to firmly handle the dogushi head stick.
Unlike kabuki , which emphasizes the performance of the main actors, bunraku simultaneously demonstrates elements of presentation directly attempting to invoke a certain response and representation trying to express the ideas or the feelings of the author.
In this way attention is given to both visual and musical aspects of the puppets as well as the performance and the text. Every play begins with a short ritual in which the tayu, kneeling behind a small but ornate lectern , reverentially lifts his or her copy of the script to demonstrate devotion to a faithful rendering of the text.
The script is presented at the beginning of each act as well. Despite their complex training the puppeteers originated from a very destitute background.
The kugutsu-mawashi were itinerants and as a result were treated as outcasts by the educated, richer class of Japanese society at the time.
As a form of entertainment, the men would operate small hand puppets and put on miniature theatre performances, while women were often skilled in dancing and magic tricks which they used to tempt travelers to spend the night with them.
The whole environment that gave birth to these puppet shows is reflected in the themes. This is the auxiliary stage upon which the gidayu-bushi is performed.
It juts out into the audience area at the front right area of the seats. Upon this auxiliary stage there is a special rotating platform.
All these things make it an…. Some films are bad because you expect them to be good and yet upon watching them they failed to deliver. But other films, like this one, it's obviously so cheesy that you expect it to be ridiculous.
And ironically that's what made it such an awesome film! It obviously looks like it ought to have been made in the late 90s, cuz of the cheesy comic book theme.
The intro is great, it is something refreshing just like Josh Harnett and the narrator. The production design, the acting, and the lighting have me cringing all movie long.
What new things did I learn? The camera movement is its own character when all else is going not that great. So you came for the fights?
Eh, they're not great or even close. It all gets boring well before the 1 hour mark. I find it amazing how films of this kind only get appreciated decades after it's been released.
This, ladies and gentlemen and everything in-between, is an intentional b-movie. Overly stylized, wrapped in as much self-indulgence as possible, mediocre scripting, reference-filled; this film's strengths ARE its weaknesses.
It takes us into a ride through one amazingly interesting dystopian world. However, this comes with a warning. If you fail to be swept by its style-over-substance, you might hate the "wasted potential".
Then again, it's obvious how this movie intended not to be a great hit. Think somewhere between Dick Tracy and Sin City. Unfortunately, this isn't as good as either of those films.
If you let yourself relax for a moment then you'll enjoy this movie. It's plays like a folk lore tale with incredibly cinematic visuals. The characters are tropes but pushed to their extremes.
The action is thrilling and original. The sets are gorgeous and interesting. It's like a spaghetti western, samurai film, a vintage noir, and a graphic novel all pushed into one entity.
Never really lives up to its first 6 minutes, and it also never really feels as if the movie is nothing more than a glorified production design reel.
Bunraku is proof that there are still innovative films far away from the mainstream that can inspire with their attention to detail. Great optics, comprehensible story and actors who authentically embody their characters - why is this film so unknown?!
Some parts of it really suck. But a few of the scenes, most artistic choices, and the rare piece of good cinematography redeem it somewhat.
A pretty classic example of an exciting concept that drew in some big names, front-loaded all the budget, and left all feeling sorta lacklustre.

The film feels like a comic book or graphic novel. All that was missing was the "Bam! It's been awhile since I last saw him in a movie.
He has a good chemistry with Woody and Gackt. Woody is good here and brings humor when needed.
Ron Perlman is great as usual. He kind of reminded me of Mickey Rourke's character in The Immortals. I definitely liked this film and recommend it.
Sol C Super Reviewer. Dec 31, Very weird but also very interesting. I love how this film is shot, and the artistic detail in the background and sets is simply amazing; I've never seen anything like it.
Again, weird film, but I like how it mixes genres, and I definitely like how it tells its story. After seeing the film once, you feel that the story couldn't be told any differently.
Props for casting Kevin McKidd btw Anyway, I wouldn't mind a sequel to this film. Stephen S Super Reviewer. May 23, Films like this really need to manage their style and substance.
Josh Hartnett plays a lone stranger in a world where guns have become outlawed. He is joined by lone swordsman, and the two form a friendship with a bartender.
They each have their own gripes with the mysterious leader of the town, who is protected by a group of assassins. Bunraku starts off really cool, and the visuals continue to impress throughout.
It takes on forms of puppetry at times, and also uses the aesthetics of a pop-up book for its transitions.
The wonderfully constructed sets hide the limited budget and the action scenes are competently choreographed. All this said though, it is certainly reminiscent of every western ever made.
By paying too much homage, the twists and turns become apparent early on. An exciting and fun film, but when something looks this good, you wish it try a little harder.
Luke B Super Reviewer. Apr 05, The only reason I gave "Bunraku" a pretty average score instead of something a little lower was that it was entertaining enough and of course had some great actors in it, Gackt as a Samurai too!
The film tries to go for a visually unique look and even though I understand what it's going for, it comes off just cheap more than an intentional stylistic choice.
The film doesn't take itself too seriously and Woody Harrelson and his ride help balance the more serious tone of the film but there are moments that the serious tone is just cheesy.
I can see now why some of these elements hindered the film's chance at big box office success and a timely release. In the end though, if you are looking for an action film with very little in the way of plot or story but focuses primarily on visual style it's still a fun little flick.
